Top Reason Why Garage Door Springs Break

Wear and Tear

This is the #1 reason why garage door springs fail or break! The average, properly installed torsion springs will last for approximately 10,000 cycles. A cycle is when the garage door goes up and then goes back down. Even if you were to only leave and come back once throughout the entire day, that still equates to two cycles per day or 730 in a year. That being said a garage door spring would only last for a little over 13 ½ years. However, most people open and close the door many times throughout the day, running many cycles, shortening that life span to far less than 13 ½ years. It is even possible to go through 10,000 cycles in about a year!

Why door fail off track?

Here one common reasons why.

WORN OUT ROLLERS

Just one or two worn out rollers can spell serious trouble for your garage door. If one of your rollers breaks, yes, your garage will most likely still operate just fine. However, this adds additional stress to the other rollers, leading to their eventual demise. The extra weight applied to the rollers can also cause the horizontal tracks to bend due to the unequal application of weight.

It is important to make sure your garage door is equipped with the correct rollers for your specific door. If you can, request rollers with at least 10 ball bearings. The more the better. If there is too much friction during the open and closing process, the rollers are at risk of breaking. Also, make sure you have the right size roller. There are short stem and long stem rollers. Short stem rollers are used on single garage doors, while long stem rollers are recommended for double garage doors.

Cables Come Loose Off The Drums?

Many Reasons But Here Is One Common Reason Why That May Happen.

Cables are a crucial part of the garage door counterbalancing system, so when they come loose from the drums or pulleys your door won’t work. Common reasons for thrown cables include; setting the door down on an object, corrosion, broken springs and improper tension.

Springs are under an extreme amount of tension and this force is transferred to the cables and circular spools called drums (torsion springs) or sheaves (extension springs). Broken or loose cables can render heavier garage doors unusable since the force of the springs won’t provide any lifting force. Overhead doors with loose cables are often found stuck closed or hanging halfway in the opening with a tangled mess of cable around the drums.

Garage door repair technicians and homeowners are able to reset or replace the cables, but many fail to diagnose why the cables broken or came loose in the first place. This results in re-occurring cable problems – posing safety risks, financial loss and inconvenience to the business or homeowner.

Does Your Garage Door Opener Need Repairs?

It’s not how you’d like to start your day, but your garage door opener will often make it well-known when it needs repairs. For many homeowners, the first sign of a problem is when your garage door fails to close and open. An early warning of an issue may be intermittent responses from your garage door when you try to open or close it with your operator.

To confirm the issue’s related to your operator and not your door, you can disconnect your opener and look to see if you can open and close your door manually. If you’ve noticed noises when your garage door opens and closes, it’s best to call one of our service technicians. The issue may be related to your door’s springs and tracks, which poses a significant safety risk.
